Overview

Project Lufkin is AmpZ’s (Amp Z Champion Data Center Holdings) planned campus at the former Southland/Abitibi paper mill just outside Lufkin city limits in Angelina County. The City of Lufkin’s FAQ says the project is still in planning and has not been approved for construction, estimates 30 permanent jobs and 500 construction jobs over the first several years, and notes the mill sits outside city zoning and permitting. AmpZ told the city the halls would use closed-loop cooling with about 500 gallons a day of treated water, comparable to three homes, and that Oncor industrial rate classes keep dedicated facility upgrades on that customer. State rules put data centers among the first loads curtailed when ERCOT needs to conserve power. The city said it would not receive sales or property tax from a site outside city limits, while the county tax base could rise. Data Center Dynamics, citing Angelina County records reported by the Lufkin Daily News, said Verdant Industries granted Amp Z Champion Data Center Holdings an option to buy about 1,041 acres at the mill. Company materials described a 55-megawatt on-site substation today, 175 megawatts of grid-connected capacity in 2026, 1.1 gigawatts by 2028, and a gigawatt of self-generation by 2029.
