CleanSpark announced on October 29, 2025, that it acquired rights to about 271 acres in Austin County and executed long-term power supply agreements totaling 285 megawatts for an AI data-center campus. The Nasdaq bitcoin miner said the site sits on a regional fiber backbone near high-capacity natural-gas pipelines it is evaluating for behind-the-meter generation, paid a mix of cash and common stock at closing, and expects more than 200 megawatts energized in the first half of 2027. CEO Matt Schultz called it CleanSpark’s Texas entry for a purpose-acquired AI campus. Chief business officer Harry Sudock placed the land between Houston and Austin. Senior vice president Jeffrey Thomas said a substation construction plan is underway with long-lead equipment already secured. KWHI reported Austin County commissioners voted unanimously in July 2026 for a countywide moratorium on new AI data centers and battery energy storage systems while they study fire, safety, cybersecurity, and possible energy-development zones. Prospective developers must file an equipment-manufacturer audit and certify that systems are not on the governor’s prohibited-technology list before construction can start. Austin County was the second Texas county to adopt a pause of that kind after Hill County.
