Overview

AWS New Carlisle is Amazon Web Services’ St. Joseph County campus, announced as an estimated $11 billion investment — Amazon called it the largest capital investment in Indiana history — with at least 1,000 jobs and up to $7 million toward road work around the Indiana Enterprise Center. Governor Eric Holcomb and county commission president Carl Baxmeyer framed the campus as a decade-scale employment center. AWS launched an InCommunities St. Joseph County Community Fund with $100,000 through ChangeX, grants up to $10,000, plus STEAM programming and fiber-optic fusion-splicing workshops.

Data Center Dynamics reported St. Joseph County’s final go-ahead: a 50 percent property-tax abatement over 10 years and an enterprise technology exemption, with about 85 percent tax exemption over 35 years on data-center shells. The county council voted 7–2 on August 13, Amy Drake and Mark Root opposed. Economic development director Bill Schalliol cited more than $2 billion of community investment as taxes are paid over 35 years. Construction was already underway, with four buildings expected that year and a 10- to 15-year build; images suggested as many as 22 halls on more than 600 acres assembled around New Carlisle. AWS later named St. Joseph County among Project Rainier sites. The Rainier post says Indiana halls maximize outside air for cooling, using no cooling water from October to March and only a few hours a day on an average April–September day.

IDEM’s June 12, 2026, public notice on Amazon Data Services’ SBN 210 Section 401 resubmittal places the campus south of IN-2 W and Strawberry Road. The project permanently impacts 4.88 acres of emergent wetland and 0.06 acre of scrub-shrub wetland, 3,986 linear feet of streams, and temporarily 387.5 linear feet of streams, with on-site wetland creation and stream-credit purchase proposed. Same-county Microsoft Granger is the other St. Joseph draft on disk.
