Overview

Microsoft broke ground on a La Porte, Indiana, datacenter campus on June 17–18, 2026. Microsoft Local reported the ceremony with Mayor Tom Dermody and vice chair and president Brad Smith, plus a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College to launch Indiana’s first Microsoft Datacenter Academy. Smith said the first phase will create more than 600 permanent Microsoft jobs beyond thousands of construction jobs, grow school tax revenue, use closed-loop liquid cooling, and strengthen flood protection and habitat.

Inside INdiana Business, citing The Times of Northwest Indiana, called it a $1 billion campus. The first three buildings are expected in 2029; first phase ultimately six buildings. Microsoft said up to 2,000 construction jobs and up to 600 employees. After first phase, work is set to start on an 11-building second campus after the La Porte City Council annexed 1,000 acres near the original site. Earlier in 2026 Mayor Dermody announced Microsoft would pay property taxes in full, with the Redevelopment Commission allocating 15 percent of that revenue to La Porte Community School Corp. for 20 years. Data Center Dynamics reported site prep began in March, Buildings 1–3 through the end of 2027, completion in 2029, an original 245,000-square-foot hall on 489 acres at Radius Industrial Park, and an April 2026 plan for 17 buildings between East 250 South, East State Road 4, and Stevens Road. DCD notes Google Michigan City immediately north, where Google is developing Project Maize. Microsoft is also preparing work in Granger, mapped as Microsoft Granger.
