Overview

AWS Susquehanna is Amazon Web Services’ nuclear-adjacent data-center campus in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, next to Talen Energy’s Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. Data Center Dynamics reported AWS acquiring Talen’s Cumulus campus for $650 million — $350 million at close and $300 million escrowed against 2024 development milestones — after a Talen investor presentation named Amazon as the buyer. Talen sold the site and assets of Cumulus Data. CEO Mac McFarland said the sale unlocked value from Cumulus and from carbon-free power at Susquehanna. The 1,200-acre campus draws from the neighboring 2.5 GW nuclear station. Talen broke ground in 2021 and completed a first 48 MW, 300,000-square-foot hyperscale hall, with a separate cryptomine remaining with Talen and TeraWulf. Talen said AWS aims to develop a 960 MW campus, with minimum contractual power ramping in 120 MW increments and a one-time option to cap commitments at 480 MW, plus two 10-year extension options tied to nuclear license renewals and a 10-year power-purchase agreement from Susquehanna.
