Overview

Amazon Web Services’ Wheatfield campus is Project Rise, a planned data-center development on former NIPSCO land in Jasper County, Indiana, near the Schahfer Generating Station. Data Center Dynamics reported that AWS presented a nine-building plan for a 304-acre property about half a mile from the generating station. The Northwest Indiana Forum announced county approval in June 2026 and said Amazon would invest $25 million to extend domestic water service in Wheatfield Township. Amazon will also fund the water and wastewater infrastructure serving its campus, with campus water supplied by NIPSCO rather than the public systems. The forum said the cooling design will use outside air during most of the year and switch to water-based cooling on the hottest days, estimated at about two percent of the year. That approach is intended to reduce electricity demand during periods when the regional grid is most stressed. The project sits southwest of Michigan City in northwest Indiana and expands AWS’s presence in a state where the company is also building around New Carlisle. Public discussion of the Wheatfield proposal connected the tract’s reuse to the surrounding power infrastructure and to local utility improvements.
