Overview

Amazon Web Services announced plans to invest an estimated $11 billion in Georgia infrastructure for cloud computing and AI, with new data centers in Butts County. Amazon said the investments in Butts and Douglas counties are expected to create at least 550 new high-skilled jobs. Butts County Board of Commissioners chairman Russ Crumbley said Amazon Web Services had chosen to locate new data centers in the county and called the investment the most significant in Butts County history, after more than a year of work by the commission, the Development Authority of Butts County, the Butts County Water and Sewer Authority, and the Butts County School System. AWS vice president of economic development Roger Wehner said the planned multibillion-dollar investment would create more than 550 well-paying jobs and that state and local leaders had made the expansion possible. Amazon said generative AI is driving demand for cloud infrastructure and that the Georgia data centers would run GPUs for traditional workloads or AI and machine learning models. The company said it has contributed to Georgia’s economy since 2010, supporting 34,000 full- and part-time jobs in the state plus 44,700 indirect jobs, and that the new AWS roles would include data-center engineers, network specialists, engineering operations managers, and security specialists.

South of Atlanta, 75 South is a Hillwood-affiliate proposal in neighboring Spalding County. Stillwater Technology Park is a withdrawn gigawatt-scale filing in Clayton County. Project Sail is a $17 billion Prologis campus that Coweta County voted to rezone.
