Overview

AWS Blue Marlin is Amazon’s planned data-center campus in Richmond County, North Carolina, announced as Project Blue Marlin. The Richmond County Daily Journal reported Governor Josh Stein unveiling at Cole Auditorium in Hamlet a $10 billion Amazon Web Services investment expected to generate at least 500 full-time jobs and thousands of construction jobs over the next decade. Stein called it one of the largest capital investments in North Carolina history. AWS economic-development director Roger Wehner said Amazon’s path to Richmond County began with an energy conversation in 2023 and that Duke Energy put the Energy Way site on Amazon’s radar. He said construction would start in the coming weeks, with multiple buildings over the next decade, about $35 million in water and sewer public works, and tens of millions of dollars of regional fiber. Shannon Kellogg, Amazon’s vice president of public policy, launched the Amazon Richmond County Community Fund with an initial $150,000 for grants up to $10,000. Chairman Rick Watkins compared the announcement to the railroad making Richmond County a Seaboard hub in 1900. The Pilot reported Amazon building the campus in the county.
