Overview
Microsoft’s Project Osmium is a West Des Moines data-center campus announced in 2016. The planned program totals 1.7 million square feet at full buildout. In 2021, Microsoft received permission for a third building in a five-building plan, continuing the campus’s phased development.
Data Center Dynamics, citing the Business Record, reported a December permit valued at $255 million for work at 5855 SW Kerry Street. The permitted building was described in the existing project account as a 241,000-square-foot addition. That investment and address concern Project Osmium; they do not identify Microsoft’s Ginger East, Ginger West, Mountain, or Alluvion projects, which are separate Des Moines-area sites.
The campus spans Warren and Madison counties and remains distinct from Microsoft Van Meter, another Microsoft data-center listing in the region. Osmium’s timeline runs from its 2016 announcement through the 2021 approval and the later December permit. The available sources establish the campus name, location, five-building plan, full-buildout floor area, permitted addition, address, and permit value without assigning the other Microsoft project names to this map pin. The building census below records three operating Osmium structures and their combined mapped capacity.
The public map lists 3 map records. Reported campus capacity is 171 MW. All 3 buildings are operating.
