Overview

Google’s Council Bluffs Southlands campus in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, is the company’s original Iowa data-center complex, operating since 2007. The Columbia Tribune, reprinting the Des Moines Register, reported on May 30, 2025, that Google will invest $7 billion to expand cloud and AI infrastructure at that Council Bluffs complex and to build a data center in Cedar Rapids, more than doubling its existing Iowa investment. The article said Google has invested $6.8 billion in Iowa since launching a Council Bluffs data center in 2007 and that company officials did not share how the $7 billion would be split between Iowa facilities. It recounted a $600 million add in 2022 to an already $5 billion, 1,000-acre Council Bluffs complex and another $1 billion in 2024. Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, framed the announcement around American technical infrastructure. Governor Kim Reynolds called the additional investment an endorsement of the state. The same report said Microsoft and Meta have built Iowa campuses and that Cedar Rapids officials had signed a January development agreement for a $750 million QTS data center near Google’s Cedar Rapids site. Google’s operating Council Bluffs Southlands halls sit in Pottawattamie County on the public map, separate from QTS Cedar Rapids in Linn County.
