Overview

QTS is building a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, data-center campus that the company’s site page calls the largest economic development in the city’s history, with a planned $10 billion investment. QTS says the campus will span 612 acres with up to seven buildings in Big Cedar Industrial Center and is expected to support over 2,000 high-quality construction and permanent jobs. The company says it partners with local utilities to pay 100 percent of its own energy use so project costs are not pushed onto ratepayers, uses a closed-loop cooling system that does not consume water for cooling, and launched a $5 million skilled trades training program across eastern Iowa. QTS lists CDR1 addresses at 6200 76th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids for DC1, DC2, and DC3. The Weitz Company says the Layton | Weitz joint venture is constructing one of the seven data-center buildings on those 612 acres. Corridor Business Journal reported that after an April 24, 2026, tour of the southwest Cedar Rapids site, co-CEO Tag Greason said the seven-building campus is the largest in QTS’s U.S. portfolio, that about 8,500 workers were on site daily near peak, and that each hall would start operations with cooling water roughly equivalent to an Olympic-sized pool under closed-loop cooling. Alliant Energy CEO Lisa Barton told the tour the campus would use about 1.05 gigawatts and pointed to Alliant’s five-year Iowa rate freeze.
