Overview

Google’s Palo campus is a planned $1 billion-plus, six-building data-center park on about 545 acres next to the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa. Data Center Dynamics reported Google dropped unincorporated-county siting and asked the City of Palo to annex the tract after Linn County adopted a water-study ordinance; Google had told supervisors the halls would take about 12 million gallons a day from the Cedar River. Corridor Business Journal said the company is moving the project into Palo to leave that county ordinance, pausing a $500,000 regional water-balance study Google had agreed to fund. KCRG reported Palo’s planning commission recommended a city data-center ordinance that defers water permitting to the Iowa DNR rather than a county water-use agreement. Iowa Public Radio covered Palo’s July 2026 ordinance vote and Linn County’s 18-month moratorium plus a staff option to treat a data center as an accessory to the nuclear plant. WIRED described Google’s 25-year purchase of the bulk of Duane Arnold’s more than 600 MW output to restart the reactor by 2029 with NextEra Energy.
