Overview

AWS Threemile is Amazon’s planned exascale data-center campus on former Threemile Canyon Farms ground near Boardman in Morrow County, Oregon. The Oregonian reported Amazon buying nearly 1,300 acres earlier that month for $37 million, with planning documents describing a hypothetical 1-gigawatt facility of as many as 20 buildings over 4 million square feet. Portland consulting firm Johnson Economics described the potential development in a land-use proposal submitted while the megadairy still owned the grazeland. Johnson Economics defined exascale campuses as 800 to 1,500 acres, a step up from 100-to-200-acre hyperscale sites. The Oregonian said Amazon already had several Morrow County halls on about 800 acres, that Pacific Power said it could serve the site with transmission lines that have been approved but not yet built, and that the Port of Morrow committed 35 million gallons of water a year, up to 1,300 gallons per minute at peak. Data Center Dynamics reported the same 1,300-acre Boardman purchase and the 1 GW, 20-building, four-million-square-foot planning figures. AWS told GeekWire it had recently purchased land in Boardman, that development plans were not final, and that it was performing due diligence based on customer demand. DCD noted AWS has operated in Morrow County since around 2011, expanded in Hermiston in Umatilla County from around 2017, and that its US West Oregon cloud region runs from those facilities. In January 2026 Amazon acquired the Sunstone shovel-ready solar-plus-storage project in Morrow County, aimed at 1.2 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of battery storage.
