Overview

Data Center Dynamics reported that Google confirmed it is behind a proposed data center in Lincoln, Nebraska, announcing the same week that it was building a third data center in Papillion and investing $1.2 billion in the works. Allie Hopkins, Google’s head of data centers, said the company was in Nebraska to stay and expand. DCD said Google had been proposing a Lincoln site through Agate LLC since 2019, after Agate first filed for a $600 million data-center campus in Lancaster County in July 2019, and that planning documents suggest two million square feet of data-center space on more than 570 acres of farmland bounded by North 40th Street, Highway 77, Interstate 80, and Bluff Road, with a substation close by across Highway 77. DCD said Agate gained approval for its request in September 2021 after acquiring land at 8905 and 9385 North 56th Street from the Brager and White Family LLCs for around $18.6 million. Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said Google’s decision reflected Lincoln’s business climate. DCD noted Google’s three Omaha-area projects, including Papillion and the Council Bluffs, Iowa, campus established in 2007, and a recent $350 million Council Bluffs expansion. Congressman Mike Flood joked that Google was handing out data centers like candy.
