Overview
Nature Forward reported on April 27, 2026, that TeraWulf plans to convert the Morgantown Generating Station in Charles County, Maryland, into a data-center campus. The group said TeraWulf filed a February 2026 FERC application to buy the oil-fired station, which currently generates 216 MW for the regional grid, and wants an initial 500 MW of generation while developing data-center load incrementally toward a 1,000 MW, 1 GW goal, remaining a net-positive energy supplier for Maryland. Nature Forward said FERC authorized the Morgantown sale to TeraWulf on July 29, 2026, after petitions to deny the transfer from Sierra Club, Public Citizen, the Port Tobacco River Conservancy, the Maryland Office of the People’s Counsel, and PJM’s Independent Market Monitor. TeraWulf has said it will not repower coal and instead intends to use natural gas. The BayNet reported that Charles County planning staff told the Planning Commission on August 3, 2026, that a commercial listing marketing Piney Reach Industrial Park land off Billingsley Road as a data-center site was not an application under review. Planning director Jason Groth said the county did not have any data centers under review. The public map’s Chesapeake Data pin is the Charles County campus tracked at 1,000 MW planned.
The public map lists one map record, Chesapeake Data, 1,000 MW, planned. Reported campus capacity is 1,000 MW.
